Move to fully qualified hostnames for nodes

At the moment we use socket.gethostname(), which returns inconsistent results depending on setup and distro. We should use a fully qualified hostname.

Note that we've already reverted one attempt at this. The database migration is more complicated that it looks at first (in that one is actually needed)...
