The risk here is that there are many version comparisons deployed
in the real world, and only a few are actually correct, the rest are
merely "gud enuf" until they aren't.
But if twiddle-in-version and Epoch: digits -> string are being
contemplated (they are), then its time to also try to document
version comparison (at the same time that the corner case tests
that need to be written for regression tests are undertaken)
