Faster Ubuntu Login Speed
The login speed from GDM to desktop is incredibly slow, normally about 30 seconds, when compared to the boot time which is about 24 seconds on average. It is silly targeting a 10 second boot time for 10.04 when the login speed still remains 3x slower. I believe that a slow user login affects users more than a slow boot time.
Several improvements were made in Intrepid and Jaunty, but the login speed on Jaunty is still unacceptable, and I believe that this has not been improved much in Karmic.
I think that alongside the < 10 second boot time target for 10.04, there should also be a login time target that would improve the overall user experience much more than just a fast boot to GDM.
Apparently other users have described the Ubuntu login time as horrendously slow compared with other Linux distros, and some have also said that Vista logs in faster than Ubuntu. This problem seems to be most prevalent on Laptops. I, myself experience a very slow login time (about 30 seconds) running 64 bit Jaunty on a dual core, 3GB RAM, 5400RPM HDD Laptop.
