Wireless Network Sniffer

There should be some method of discovering wirless networks automatically. At first glance, kismet seems a likely solution, however since it requires users to actively edit the configuration files, requires patches for orinoco drivers to work, and has no support whatsoever for broadcom or ndiswrapper it won't solve this problem. Ideally, there should be a gnome applet, perhaps the Network Monitor applet or a new applet, that displays the wireless signal strength and a dropdown menu of available networks.
